Implantology is the science that allows us to be like sculptures in dentistry. Thanks to this method, we manage to build the most natural smiles and help our patients feel fulfilled. In the vast world of the Internet, however, there are many untrue facts that are undeservedly associated with dental implants. At VM DENT we refute them. Here are some of the most popular myths about dental implants:
Implants are expensive
This is probably the most common argument against implants. We do not dispute that implant placement is an expensive procedure. But when you consider the result and the long life of the implant, you will find that every lev spent is worth it. If we compare the treatment with dental implants and fixed bridge structures, which can be considered as an alternative treatment in some cases, then the implants allow the development of much more comfortable and aesthetic restorations.
In addition, compared to prostheses, implants have no other hidden costs than prostheses. In order to fix them in the mouth, you need to regularly buy a suitable fixing cream for the prostheses. According to our observations, prostheses should be replaced every 10 years and the crowns: every 5 to 10 years. With good care, you may never need to replace your dental implants, which makes them a very good investment in your health.
Implants are a very painful procedure
Visits to the dentist’s office are becoming more and more enjoyable from year to year, thanks to advances in painkillers. When placing implants, mainly local anesthesia or neuroleptanalgesia (sedation) is used. So, regardless of whether a whole jaw will be placed or a missing tooth will be filled, implants are the better choice.
Dental implants fall out and need to be replaced often
Implantology has been proven to be one of the most reliable methods of treatment with a success rate of well over 90%.
If you take the necessary care of the implants, they can “serve” you for a lifetime. All that is required is just good maintenance of oral hygiene with daily regular washing and preventive examinations.
It is a misconception that dental implants need too much maintenance. The dental implant is hidden under a crown and needs the same care as your natural tooth. It does not move or remove, unlike dentures, which must be removed and cleaned to reduce the chance of infection.
Older people are not suitable candidates for implants
In younger patients, in whom the bone structure of the jaw has not yet fully developed, implants will not be an appropriate solution.
But in elderly patients, there is no such restriction. In the field of implantology, there are successful cases of implant placement even in patients between 80 and 90 years old.
One of the great advantages of dental implants is that they allow the correction of the so-called “senile” appearance of the face. In cases where a large part of the teeth are missing, the soft tissues (lips and cheeks) tend to fall inwards towards the oral cavity. This leads to a deepening of the nasolabial folds or, more simply, wrinkles are formed.
The implant can often be rejected by the patient
Such cases are not absent in practice, but they are rare. Implants are made of materials that are compatible with the natural environment in the oral cavity and are easily perceived by the patient. In rare cases of rejection, we carefully study the cause to find the right solution and, if necessary, repeat the procedure.
Implants do not look natural
A total myth! Implantology is the goddess of dental methods.
There is no reason to worry that others will notice a difference and understand that you have implants. The dental implant is hidden under a crown that blends perfectly and mimics your teeth. Even you will find it difficult to tell the difference between a crown and your natural teeth. And unlike a natural tooth, the crown does not change color due to various factors – such as various foods and beverages, caffeine, smoking, and others.
Thanks to the implants, we can create a smile that looks as natural as it possibly can and naturally white. Usually, only our patients know that they have implants in their mouths. To those around them, their smile seems natural.
So forget about the myths, and trust the professionals from VM DENT and make an appointment today for a consultation.
